Latest Rocker Jig Uses Router Table

To Create Decorative Wooden Box Corners

Minnesota’s Medina The Router Table Spline Jig, available at Rockler Woodworking and Hardware, is a tool for making decorative splines for mitered box and frame joints that mounts to a router table. Additionally, the splines strengthen the joint. The two primary components of the Router Table Spline Jig are the sled, which holds the workpiece at a 45-degree angle to the router bit, and the base, which fastens to the router table. To direct the spline cuts, the sled slides in the base’s tracks. Users can apply their own key stock to the resulting spline cuts to produce exquisitely ornamented joints. The Router Table Spline Jig specializes in small boxes and frames, while the recently introduced Large Box Spline Jig utilizes handheld routing to cut splines for large boxes and chests that are too large for a router table to handle.

“The Router Table Spline Jig is an exciting way to use the router table to add designer flair to mitered joints,” says Steve Krohmer, Rockler’s Vice President of Product Marketing. “Different spline shapes can be created by using different router bits, resulting in strikingly beautiful joints.”

The Router Table Spline Jig consists of a high-pressure laminate base which attaches to the router table with a pair of miter bars and 5-star knobs, and a durable plastic sled which cradles the miter joint and slides in the channels of the base to guide centered spline cuts through the joint. The Router Table Spline Jig is capable of accommodating frames with a standard 11” x 14” opening, or boxes measuring up to 12” x 12” x 12”. Two adjustable fences sandwich the workpiece for extra stability during cutting. A centering tool is included, which aligns the jig with the center of the router bit and attaches to the jig for storage when not in use.

The Router Table Spline Jig (59288) retails for $79.99 and can be purchased at Rockler Woodworking and Hardware stores nationwide, Rockler.com, or from the Rockler catalog. For store locations or a free catalog, please visit http://www.rockler.com or call 1-877-ROCKLER.

What is the purpose of a spline jig?

What is this? The purpose of the spline jig I constructed is to reinforce the mitered corners of picture frames and little boxes. When applying glue alone to a miter joint, the wood may expand and contract, causing cracks along the seams. To firmly hold the corner together, the spline is bonded into the connection across the two neighboring boards.
