What are Insurance Approved Locks? – Video – IKS Locksmiths

This is the first in a series of my quick, no-nonsense video security guides.

In this video I will explain what an Insurance approved lock is and show you how to check if you have an Insurance Approved BS3621 lock on your door. This is important because without one your insurance policy is invalid. You can also check out the post I wrote about  insurance approved locks and how important they are for insurance claims.

I hope you find it useful. Do let me know if there is a subject you would like to see a video on.

Thanks for watching.

Hi there my name is Martin Slane and I am from IKS Locksmiths.

I’m going to give you a quick guide to Insurance Approved Locks.

When you look at your home contents insurance it will normally ask you for certain locks to have around the house.

Today I will be focusing on what locks you should have on your front door and other doors around your house, but mainly your front door.

For front door security you should always have a BS3621 lock.

The most common one is the 5 level lock and what I’m going to talk to you about today is what a 5 lever lock is and why it’s important that you use it.

First of all, about using it, if you do not use it your insurance policy will not be covered.

So what is a 5 lever lock? This is one of the most common ones on the market, it is the old style chubb lock, it’s now made by Union and this, if you can focus in on here (I don’t know if you can get that, it says 5 lever just here and it’s got the British Standard Kite Mark, like a narrow heart down the bottom.

This is the latest BS3621 lock which is from 2007. The difference between this and the older one is the bolt throw.

The bolt is a 20mm bolt throw, so it goes a bit deeper into the door.

It’s got 5 levers inside it so each one of these cuts in the key will pick up one of the levers as it goes through.

And that’s basically it in a nutshell, what you should have on your front door, something that complies to BS3621 and that should cover you from an insurance perspective.
